I am proud to be the lead developer for an unannounced multiplayer title from Mars Games. As the lead developer, I mentor the other developers, implement the studio’s development standards, advise on system design, and oversee the development efforts.
Research Summary:
From several years of industry experience with good and bad leadership, I knew I would have a substantial impact on the other developers as the lead developer for Mars Games. As such, I had two main goals in mind: assigning work relevant to developers’ career goals to the best of my ability and facilitating open communication through frequent one-on-ones.
Toward the end of the program, I watched GDC talks on leadership from Marc Espinola Berestein and Katie Golden & Erin Ali. Both GDC talks discussed how important open communication and career goal support are for the leadership-direct relationship, which showed me I was on the right path with my approach. They also showed me where I need to improve. By retaining previous work responsibilities alongside my managerial ones, I was burning out and failing to set the example of a good work-life balance for my team.
